Peer Support Program

As people are not willing to listen to advice given from someone who has never been in their shoes – how can they possibly know what they are talking about if they have never had the same experience? The same applies to disabilities. The best person to discuss the challenges faced by someone with a disability is someone who lives the same life daily. Persons with a disability as well as parents of children with disabilities are trained as peer and parent supporters on various aspects of disability, prevention of disabilities, and health promotion allowing them to give support to those with disabilities in their communities.

Tygerberg APD has eight peer and parent supporters in the following communities:

  • Elsies River
  • Delft
  • Bloekombos
  • Mfuleni
  • Parow
  • Eerste River
  • Wallacedene
